Chapter 13

Ann

My heart pounded hard as I pressed myself against the wall. I did not know how long I had been standing out on the balcony watching Michael and Rydel in the pool. As I watched the father and son, it was easy to forget that he was a criminal. How could sweet Rydel have come from stock such as this?

I watched them for a while, but when Michael looked up, I felt as if I was caught in the crosshairs and that there was a target on my forehead. As soon as he looked away, I pulled back. And here I stood, not daring to move until I was sure he was gone, lest he looked up again and found me climbing back into the classroom through the window.

I waited a good ten minutes before I went back inside. I gathered up the few things I had taken with me and went down to my room, praying I would not run into him. I sat on the bed and looked around. It felt strange that twenty-four hours ago, I had been here with a doctor. And now it was my room? Or was it my new prison?

Ring!

I jumped at the shrillness of the intercom. I went over and pressed the button. “Yes?”

“Mr. De Rose asked me to remind you that dinner is at six.”

“Thank you, Celia.”

The microphone went dead. This was my new normal—breakfast at seven-thirty, lunch at twelve-thirty, and dinner at six. Any snacks I needed in-between could be sourced from the well-stocked refrigerator.

I went and showered quickly and changed into a pair of jeans and a blouse. It was a little strange not having to think about my hair as I ran a comb through it. I would need to get it touched up once a month as the roots grew out. As I was about to step out of the room, I heard footsteps. I pulled back as I listened to Rydel and his father as they went down for dinner. When I could no longer hear their footsteps, I stepped out. As I entered the dining room, they both looked up. I avoided looking at Michael and smiled at Rydel.

“Miss Ann! You’re here!”

“Yes, I am, sweetheart.”

“Miss Ann is going to be here for a while.” Michael told him.

“Awesome!”

Celia started serving, and soon all that could be heard was the sound of utensils. I felt as if a rock sat in my stomach. I preoccupied myself with tending to Rydel while my plate went untouched save for a bite or two. I tried to keep up a conversation with Rydel while responding mechanically to Michael, but soon I was at breaking point. When Celia brought out dessert, I refused the tasty treat and asked to be excused. Before I could get a response, I made my escape.

I raced up the stairs and into the safety of my room. I changed into my sleep shirt, turned off the lights, leaving only the bathroom light on, and climbed into bed though it was barely eight-thirty.
